The technical department had 2 normoxic trimix students in February, Deon from Doxa lodge on open circuit and Luca, originally from Italy but now living in Zimbabwe, on closed circuit rebreather.
We had some fantastic dives including 2 on the Klipfontein and reef exploration at 60 meters. During decompression on our first dive to the Klipfontein, we had 4 Zambezi sharks come and investigate us, one of which was a whopping 2.75m in length. That kept us on our toes and made the deco much more exciting! We had good visibility and moderate current on both these dives. The last dive of the course was a new spot for us, offshore from Yogis and never dived before! Like the other sites we have dived offshore, we found good structure down to 60m, where the bottom gently slopes off to sand. There were plenty of nudibranchs to be found and the visibility here was also good, although there was a sharp thermocline at about 40m with the temperature on the bottom a chilly 22 degrees.
Diving to 60m is not for everyone and it takes allot of preparation, planning and practice to do this safely. Gas consumption (even for the CCR divers, you must calculate bail out requirements), decompression obligation and various ´´what if´´ scenarios are all meticulously gone through beforehand, it´s a far cry from rolling off the boat and calling the dive on 50 bar!. These dives all had around an hour of free floating decompression, hanging from delayed SMB´s in the blue with the boat following along.
